Can I Grow Wildflowers In My Garden?

It’s no secret that wildflowers are a great addition to any garden or landscape, particularly due to their pleasing appearance full of vibrant colours. Wildflower lawns and meadows also provide insects and pollinators with food and space to breed, presenting the perfect way to improve the look of an English wildflower meadow whilst also helping nature thrive.

Below we’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions about growing wildflower seeds and wildflower seed mixes to help you along the way.

Are wildflowers easy to grow?

In short, yes! Wildflowers are arguably some of the easiest plants to grow, as they require minimal effort after they are established.

What is the best time to sow wildflower seeds?

Wildflowers can be sown throughout the year, however, it is usually recommended to sow your wildflower seed mix during Autumn if you can. During this period, your wildflowers are likely to bloom the quickest.

There’s no need to worry if you are planning to grow wildflowers at a different time of year - you may just have to be a little more patient when it comes to waiting for them to grow.

Where should I plant wildflowers in my garden?

Ideally, you need to plant your wildflowers in an area with access to full direct sunlight. At least 6 hours of sunlight per day is needed for wildflowers to bloom properly and maintain good health. Even if you have purchased a shade wildflower mix, they still require some access to sunlight in order to establish properly.

If you wish to plant wildflowers in an area that is full of other plants, it is best to ensure that all weeds are removed and any existing plants are trimmed or mowed first. Your soil needs to be prepared as much as possible before planting wildflowers, by removing as much grass as you can from the area before growing wildflower seeds.

How often should I water wildflower seeds?

Once you have planted your wildflower seed mix, you will need to ensure the ground remains moist. In dry weather, watering may be necessary to prevent the soil drying out, but take care not to over-water and saturate the ground. The first six weeks after planting is particularly essential, as during this time the seedlings will germinate and become established. Once fully established, watering is not normally necessary.

How do you look after wildflowers?

In the first year after sowing, to control any weeds and reduce the competition from grasses, you should cut the sward to a height of 5-7cm every two months. Make sure that you remove all the cuttings when doing so. This may seem counterproductive when you are trying to establish your wildflowers, but it ensures strong growth and establishment, and suppression of any weeds.

In subsequent years, an early cut in March or April and then a second cut after flowering (usually between August and October) will be sufficient. Again, always make sure that you remove the cuttings.
